Afro-Cuban Dance Fundamentals with Jennifer Donello

Helen Newman Dance Studio

Saturday May 18 1:30pm-3:00pm

An introduction to the traditional dances of the Orisha, Palo (Bantu), and Arrara traditions as they exist in Cuba; and to the foundation dance movements of the Yoruba, Bantu and Dahomey cultures. This workshop introduces the movement of the skirts and other instruments used in the dances such as Ogun's machete and Oya's Iruke. Afro-Cuban rhythm underlies contemporary Latin dance forms such as Rumba, Mambo, and Salsa, and has made its way into American mainstream music via Latin Jazz and Rock. These connections are explored.
